Unfolding Curves & Veg

NOTE: These photos were taken after a heatwave, so the lawn does look dry as there is no irrigation on this project which was the clients choice.

We had designed the front garden in 2021, a simple refined and formal space that emphasised the pedestrian entrance to the house. I was asked to design the rear garden in 2024. The site was almost like a small holding with covenants on the land to stop further development. This worked well for the clients who had a passion for vegetable growing and gardening. There were height differences very close to the house, the budget was sufficient but not without limits, and the client wanted to keep the vegetable space in the approximate place they been using before as they had an appreciation for the soil they had been developing over the years with hard work. They liked the idea of curves and two separate spaces, one for grandchildren and future uses and one for dining. I proposed what I hoped were elegant curving walls that dealt with the height differences with delicate terracing, and seating circles to create sense of identity. I proposed new curving axis that created an amphitheatre of wildflowers and crossed another axis that led to a vegetable garden with cedar greenhouse.
