The Quad Garden

The client had inherited this property and was developing it for their retirement. ‘Their love of the person who had left them the house, the stories of those people who had loved to grow vegetables, and the age of the old brick cottage, suggested a formal space that was vibrant and planted, with some edible features, a space that respected the historic setting. The client wanted to offer respite care as part of their semi-retirement, and so we needed to create a design that was accessible to people who were wheelchair bound and to create places to go within the landscape. Our proposal for a quad garden felt right, and the client loved it, with a cherry tree as centre piece and four fruit trees in the centre of each quad. The finished garden seemed to become a hive of wildlife activity and the client has commented that the garden continually draws them out of the house to live, in the outside space.’ Doug Holloway
